We are deeply saddened about the recent passing of Ellen Meiksins Wood, historian and political theorist. Spanning a career of more than four decades, Ellen was one of the most influential Marxists of our time. A prolific scholar, engaged intellectual, and arresting public speaker, she turned many an orthodoxy on its head. Her path-breaking contribution to the current of Marxism known sometimes as ‘Political Marxism’ was especially important, along with Robert Brenner and Georges Comninel.
Recently, a symposium was held at Birkbeck in the UK in Ellen’s honour. Verso have kindly put a recording of the symposium on their website, and also collected together some examples of Ellen’s scholarship. They can all be accessed here http://www.versobooks.com/authors/263-ellen-meiksins-wood
Vivek Chibber, Professor of Sociology at NYU, has written this tribute to Ellen in the online magazine Jacobin https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/01/ellen-wood-obituary-chibber-retreat-from-class-origins-of-capitalism-marxist/
The political theorist Corey Robin has also posted a tribute to Ellen here http://coreyrobin.com/2016/01/14/ellen-meiksins-wood-1942-2016/
RIP Ellen Meiksins Wood.
